West Hampstead Area

Living in West Hampstead

The southern area of NW6 is characterised by broad avenues, leafy gardens and access to some of the best parks in London – including Hampstead Heath, Regents Park and Queen’s Park itself. The majority of the housing in the area was constructed swiftly in the late 19th century to cater for London’s growing middle classes. The granting of conservation status to much of Hampstead and Queen’s Park has protected both areas from overdevelopment, and left them as a series of residential and beautifully preserved Victorian suburbs.

West Hampstead
Originally known as the village of West End, West Hampstead is a small and tranquil chunk of London centred around the reminiscently named West End Lane. West Hampstead was developed as the railways came to London in the late 19th century, and impressive travel links are still a big draw for those choosing to live in the area today.
Conservation status has allowed West Hampstead’s numerous independent shops, restaurants and cafes to thrive away from intrusive chain stores. The area’s position between Hampstead Village, Kilburn and Swiss Cottage, however, means that residents can easily make the most of nearby facilities, while benefiting from high levels of community spirit and a weekly farmers market offering fresh and local produce.
